Virus Alert



Dear Valued MyMDU Internet Customer

Due to numerous virus/worm epidemic plaguing the Internet, MyMDU is providing this resource to help eradicate the latest viruses from our online communities.  In addition to the virus removal tools provided here, all MyMDU Internet subscribers are encouraged to install regularly updated anti-virus software and update the operating system with the latest security patches and updates.

Free Online Scan Tool

Symantec provides an online scanning tool to help detect security threats. Symantec Security Check tests your exposure to a wide range of online threats. It's free and efficient, and it helps you determine your Internet security needs. Click on the Symantec Security Check link and follow the procedures to scan you computer.

Once you have determined that your computer has been infected or compromised, download the appropriate removal tool and follow the instructions below.

Download Procedure

1.  Under the Removal Tools Section, follow the link for the required removal tool, read the instructions, and download the software to your computer.
 2.  Specify your desktop or any other location you prefer to save the files in.
 3.  Follow the procedures below to complete the removal process.

Virus Removal Procedures

1.  Close all running applications.
2.  If your computer is still connected to the network, disconnect your computer by unplugging the network cable from the data jack.
3.  If you are running Windows ME/XP, disable System Restore. Refer to the section, "How to enable/disable Windows Me/XP System Restore," below for additional details.

 
Note: You must have administrative rights to run these tools on Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, or Windows XP.

4.  Double-click the file that you downloaded earlier to launch the removal tool. Click "Start" to begin the process, and then allow the tool to run.  The tool will scan the computer for a specific worm/virus and remove it if present.  Once the scan is complete, click "OK" and close all windows before proceeding to the next step.

Note: If, when running the tools, you see a message that the tool was not able to remove one or more files, run the tool in Safe mode. Shut down the computer, turn off the power, and wait 30 seconds. Restart the computer in Safe mode and then run the tool again. All the Windows 32-bit operating systems, except Windows NT, can be restarted in Safe mode. For instructions, read the document "How to start the computer in Safe Mode." 

5.  Reboot the computer and let Windows start normally.
6.  Run the removal tools again to ensure that the system is clean.
7.  Install an anti-virus program and update regularly.


To turn off Windows XP System Restore:


 Notes:
  • These instructions assume that you are using the default Windows XP Start Menu and have not changed to the Classic Start menu. To re-enable the default menu, right-click Start, click Properties, click Start menu (not Classic) and then click OK.
  • You must be logged in as an Administrator to do this. If you are not logged in as an Administrator, the System Restore tab will not be displayed. If you do not know how to log in as Administrator, contact your system administrator (if you are on a network), the computer manufacturer, or installer.
  • Turning off System Restore will clear out all previous restore points.

  1. Click Start.
  2. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the System Restore tab.
  4. Select "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives" check box as shown in this illustration:
  5. Click Apply.
  6. As noted in the message, this will delete all existing restore points. Click Yes to do this.
  7. Click OK.
  8. Proceed with what you need to do. For example, removing viruses. Restart the computer and follow the instructions in the next section to turn on System Restore.

To turn on Windows XP System Restore:
  1. Click Start.
  2. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the System Restore tab.
  4. Clear the "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives" check box.
  5. Click Apply, and then click OK.
 

To disable Windows Me System Restore:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the System icon. The System Properties dialog box appears.


    Note: If the System icon is not visible, click "View all Control Panel options" to display it.
  3. Click the Performance tab, and then click File System. The File System Properties dialog box appears.
  4. Click the Troubleshooting tab, and then check Disable System Restore.
  5. Click OK. Click Yes, when you are prompted to restart Windows.
  6. Follow the instructions--for example, troubleshooting or virus removal--that instructed you to disable System Restore. When all instructions have been completed, enable System Restore again by following the instructions in the next section.

To enable Windows Me System Restore:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click System, and then click the Performance tab.
  3. Click File System, and then click the Troubleshooting tab.
  4. Uncheck Disable System Restore.
  5. Click OK. Click Yes, when you are prompted to restart Windows.
